JEFFERSON COUNTY, CO – A hazardous materials spill shut down parts of I-70 and U.S. 40 in Jefferson County for several hours on Wednesday morning, The Denver Post reports.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, a semi-truck caught fire and began leaking hydrochloric acid just before 8 am, forcing the closure of both directions of I-70 and U.S. 40.
Drivers attempted to get around the closure by taking Grapevine Road, causing a series of other traffic incidents. Grapevine Road is narrow, winding, and only partially paved. A semitrailer rolled over on a sharp turn and began spilling fuel.
The Colorado Department of Transportation reports that multiple semis got stuck attempting to navigate Lariat Loop Road.
All roads were restored and reopened by 2:30 pm.
