DENVER, CO – On Monday at the Denver District Court, a 20-year-old man was sentenced to 48 years in prison in connection with a fatal shooting-turned-crash that happened in 2022.

The sentence came after the 20-year-old man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in December, 9News reports.

The Backstory: The incident happened on April 8, 2022. The 20-year-old man, identified as Luis Rivas-Newcomb, was 16 years old at the time when he shot at two vehicles on the 38th and Peoria overpass, on the southbound lanes.

A driver and passenger in one of the vehicles died, and another one swerved into oncoming traffic and struck a third vehicle.

EMS crews rushed two teenage boys, aged 13 and 14, and a 36-year-old man to a hospital, where they later died.

The 36-year-old man was later identified as Uriel Reyes Medina and was driving a pickup truck.

Rivas-Newcomb was also arrested for several other crimes, such as the murder of a murder of a pregnant woman who he shot at on November 28, 2022, and getting into a shooting match with Aurora Police officers at a shopping center on November 30, 2022.

The specifics of the November 28, 2022, shooting were not made clear, but surveillance video showed people inside a white Kia Optima chasing another vehicle, occupied by that pregnant woman.

Rivas-Newcomb also pleaded guilty to those charges connected with the other shootings.
