BRIGHTON, CO – A man’s life was claimed in a single-car crash that happened in Brighton on Wednesday, CBS News reports.

The collision happened before 3:30 a.m. off the intersection of Highway 85 and East 136th Avenue. Brighton Police determined that the man, driving a Volkswagen SUV, was traveling north on the highway when he drifted off the road and crashed into a stoplight pole.

The impact of the collision led to a grass fire in the area and caused the man to be thrown from his vehicle.

The male driver died from his injuries, despite receiving CPR from EMS crews.

Brighton Fire Rescue extinguished the flames.

Police have not released the victim’s identity.

The intersection was shut down for nearly 11 hours before reopening around 3 p.m. During the closures, drivers were asked to use Interstate 76 as an alternative route to avoid traffic congestion.
