AURORA, CO – A 26-year-old Centennial man ran a red light, leading to a multi-vehicle crash that claimed his life and injured six people Monday night.
Aurora police said the Centennial man, a Tesla driver, was going 97 mph when he proceeded through the intersection of E. Alameda Pkwy and S. Quintero Way and struck another vehicle. After that initial crash, the Tesla driver hit an Aurora police car and a civilian vehicle.

The final impact partially threw the Tesla driver from the vehicle and caused the car itself to catch on fire. Fire crews said the car’s battery damage and entering a thermal runaway contributed to the fire. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames. Due to the severity of the wreck, the Tesla driver succumbed to his fatal injuries at the scene.
EMS crews transported the six occupants, three adults, and three children, to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The hospitalized individuals were passengers from the civilian vehicle. The driver of that car and the officer were unarmed.
Police confirmed in additional details that the second driver had proceeded through a green light prior to the crash. One officer confirmed they tried to get the Tesla driver to pull over but only drove at a higher rate. Due to public safety, the officer decided not to initiate the traffic stop.
The collision was reported before 8:30 p.m. Officers shut down the intersection for a few hours to accommodate the scene clearance and investigation period.
