News UPDATE: SUV driver arrested in connection with bus collision in Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, CO – An SUV driver was arrested and is expected to face several charges, including vehicular homicide, in connection with a collision involving an activity bus in Lakewood, CBS News reports.

The collision happened on Saturday, Dec 6. Lakewood police’s investigation later confirmed that the SUV driver, 22-year-old Andrew Logan Miller, was going over 40 mph on southbound Kipling Parkway when he collided with an activity bus.

The bus driver was turning left onto westbound 6th Avenue from Kipling when they collided with Miller’s white SUV.

The bus was transporting a wrestling team from Mesa County’s Central High School to and from a wrestling tournament. There were 13 students and two coaches on board. Out of the 13 athletes, three of them, plus one coach, were injured.

New information later revealed that Miller had three passengers with him inside his SUV. They were his girlfriend and her three siblings.

EMS crews transported the three athletes, one coach, and the siblings of Miller’s girlfriend to a hospital. Two of the siblings were left in critical condition, and the third passed away from his injuries.

The deceased victim has been identified as Julio Gonzalez.

Miller appeared to have sustained some cuts and bruises on his face, according to a mug shot. Police arrested him on Dec. 13. on suspicion of committing vehicular assault, speeding 40 mph or more over the limit, reckless driving, child abuse, and reckless endangerment. Officials transported him to Denver County Jail. Miller will later be transported to Jefferson County Jail. A vehicular homicide charge was later added following the death of Gonzalez.
